Workshop: Geo-Entrepreneurship - Using Location to Enhance Your Competitive Advantage

Build up your skills to bring your Geo-idea to the market! 

In this 1.5 day workshop you will be introduced to a range of techniques used by ‘startups’ to help develop your own geo-enabled business idea. You will learn the steps you need to take to identify and develop your idea, secure customers, and find market opportunities.

The participants of this workshop will be GI professionals, UNIGIS/Geo- students and alumni who want to bring their own GI-project to life, or get a new business idea off the ground. These are not only skills for new entrepreneurs, they will help you develop and champion internal company projects as well! The Workshop takes place in Salzburg on 2.-3. December 2016.

The workshop will be lead by Dr. Ian Heywood, who teaches entrepreneurship at the University of Aberdeen Business School, with a focus on practical startup tools and techniques. This workshop has been co-created with input from Ed Parsons, an Executive Fellow at the University and Google’s Geospatial Technologist. It will feature a recorded lecture from Ed about GI entrepreneurship. The workshop will be supported by e-learning materials, and will be the kick-off for a UNIGIS elective module.

Once again: UNIGIS professional attracts practitioners from near and far.

After a very successful last year in terms of student registrations for the UNIGIS professional certificate in Salzburg, the popularity of this application-oriented GIS study program offered by the Centre of Geoinformatics is continuing in 2012.

Most of this year's first group of students attended the introductory workshop a few days ago to 'dive into' an innovative and partly unfamiliar learning environment, and getting to know fellow students and UNIGIS faculty.

The broad range of participants' background domains  indicate the integrative character of spatial information science. Beyond that, a stimulating atmosphere for collaborative learning not only for students, but for the entireUNIGIS community is created by this variety.

Besides this range of domain-specific experience, the geographical distribution of students is remarkable. With participants coming from the very North of Germany as well as from South Tyrol, the Vienna region and Switzerland, the value of a study program exclusively taught online is being successfully demonstrated.


P.S.: The next UNIGIS professional study group starts in May 2012.

UNIGIS at AGIT and GI_Forum

Traditionally, the annual GI_Forum and AGIT Symposia at the University of Salzburg from July 4-8 are highlights for the UNIGIS community: more than 100 students and alumni will not only actively participate in conference events, but will meet with fellow students and the UNIGIS team face-to-face as a welcome break from telecommunication-heavy distance learning.

Some UNIGIS graduates will be recognized for their achievements, e.g. the winners of the UNIGIS International Association top Masters theses have the chance to present their work immediately following Ian Dowman's keynote on Thursday morning.

The Z_GIS - UNIGIS booth in the exhibit area again will serve as the meeting point for UNIGIS students, graduates and faculty throughout the conference. This location is the best point for information and consulting for prospective future students in the MSc and professional certificate programmes: AGIT / GI_Forum mark the opening of the registration period for the next UNIGIS courses starting in October 2011 (UNIGIS professional) and January 2012 (UNIGIS MSc)!

Gudrun Wallentin leading Salzburg UNIGIS MSc

Gudrun Wallentin has been promoted to director of studies, UNIGIS MSc at the University of Salzburg from July 1, 2011. Gudrun is joining the UNIGIS Salzburg team from the Institute of GIScience, Austrian Academy of Sciences and will be coordinating this highly regarded distance learning Masters programs (in English and German language) in Geographic Information Systems and Science!

She has a degree in ecology from the University of Innsbruck, several years of experience in managing a regional nature / conservation park in the Tyrolean Alps, subsequently received an MSc in GIS from the University of Edinburgh and her PhD for the thesis 'Individual Based Models in Ecology', exploring and applying spatiotemporal concepts in regionalized climate change analysis.

Dr Wallentin will not only provide leadership and direction to the continuous development of UNIGIS curricula, learning media and online pedagogy, but also will offer supervision and consulting to current and prospective UNIGIS students, and will contribute her experience and knowledge in GIScience to the development of future generations of GIS experts!
